How to Do Standing Sternocleidomastoid Muscle Stretch With Foam Roller, Smr
This exercise may be performed by healthy exercisers who have no neck mobility problems.
While performing this exercise, be careful not to apply pressure to the neck. Maintain good form throughout.
Beginning
Beginning Standing Sternocleidomastoid Stretch
Stand tall with the feet hip-width apart. Position a foam roller at just above shoulder-height on the wall diagonally. Roll the shoulders back. Standing sideways, lean the neck against the foam roller. Squeeze the hips. Suck in the tummy in an effort to make the navel touch the spine.
Movement
Standing Sternocleidomastoid Stretch Movement
1. Gently press the neck against the roller and position it on a tender spot on the neck. Continue to apply light pressure on the neck until 75% of the discomfort is relieved. Reposition the roller until another tender spot is located. Switch to the other side of the neck and repeat.
